Why women have a stronger sense of smell than men

Do women have a better sense of smell better than men?

Do women have a better sense of smell than men? If you have ever wondered so, you are right! A study conducted by researchers at the Federal University of Rio de Janerio in Brazil testified to this and further revealed why this is so. The study reported that women have more brain cells in the olfactory area of the brain than men. Therefore, women tend to smell things better than men.

Researchers finally uncover why women have more sensitive to smell than men

A group of researchers in Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil worked on post-mortem brains from 7 men and 11 women all over the age of 55. This group also contains researchers from the University of California, San Francisco and Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.

All the specimens are neurologically healthy, and none worked at places that can necessarily optimize the olfactory capabilities like professional cooking places. The research found out that women have an average of 43% more cells in the olfactory bulb than men in the brain.

Thus, the leader of the team, Professor Roberto of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro concluded in his report that women are truly more responsive to smell than men. He also attributed the reason to that fact that women have more cells in the olfactory bulb than men.

The Biology of the brain

There is a certain part of the brain called the olfactory bulb. This spot is responsible for receiving smell signals from the nostrils. The cells in women’s olfactory bulb are 43% more than those present in men. This gives women nose more power to detect smell than men.

The relevance of women’s strong sense of smell

The difference in the sense of smell of men and women plays a significant role in the growing differences in the social behavior of men and women. Of course, the sense of smell is directly connected to one’s perception and determines how you related to people/environment. More so, the smell is naturally linked to mental and emotional balances. Thus, it is safe to conclude that women’s superiority is cognitive or emotional, rather than perpetual.

The effect of this strong sense of smell in women is seen in their activities in the home. Of course, this partially explains why women like to keep a cleaner home than men. Women love to wear fragrances and cosmetics than men. These body care rituals are majorly for the benefit of themselves than their male partners. But, why would a woman have a stronger sense of smell than men? Is nature torturing men?

Furthermore, women use their powerful sense of smell to sniff out the right mate. Naturally, women prefer men with a peculiar smell. The admire me who exhibit generic diversity compared to theirs. Thus, the strong sense of smell found in women helps to make critical marital decisions.

The downside of women’s strong sense of smell

Women’s super-sense of smell is not only a blessing. Sometimes, it can bring a lot of discomfort to them. The extra dense of clustered neurons in the olfactory bulbs means a woman can smell better. However, this can make every day somewhat less pleasant to them as they tend to pick different unpleasing smells from the environment. Aside from this, take your time to stop and smell those beautiful roses and appreciate what those men are missing.
