  • The name “Perfume” comes from two Latin words; ‘per’ and ‘fume’. The word ”per” means through while “fume” means smoke. This instance will make sense to you if you can recall that the earliest fragrances were incense-based and were made from herbs and spices like frankincense and coriander. 
  • The earliest modern perfume produced by mixing essential oils with an alcohol solution was discovered by the Queen Elizabeth of Hungary in 1310. This fragrance is known as “Hungary Water” and was a blend of thyme, rosemary, and other variations of traditional ingredients. It was originally used as tonic water and as a perfume and is being prescribed by physicians to gargle for all kinds of ailments.
  • There are many aromatic sources that exist in nature and all parts of a plant are used for producing new and unique kind of scents. There are different fragrances made from blossoms, barks, seeds, woods, leaves, fruits, roots, resins, lichens, and even microbes.
  • Some perfumes also contain some animal ingredients although many of these are created synthetically nowadays. Some fragrances made from animal sources include honeycomb, musk, civet, ambergris, and castoreum.
  • Ambergris (mentioned above) is a whale vomit. It is a waxy substance that is often swept to the top of the beach. Today, whale vomit is still used by some of the expensive perfume brands. However, most street-side perfumes content a synthetic substitute. Old ambergris has a characteristic sweet, earthy scent and also has an enhancing effect on other fragrances.
  • Nowadays, most natural ingredients in perfumes have been replaced with synthetic fragrance oils. Therefore, most of the fragrance combinations out there are not found in nature. For instance, the Calone is synthetic oil which produces marine/ozonous scent. The substance is extracted from extreme substances like petroleum. Generally, synthetic fragrances tend to maintain a more constant effect than natural oils although some people will prefer the idea of natural, organic, and non-synthetic fragrances.  
  • The two most common types of flower used in modern perfume production are Rose and jasmine. These two natural fragrances are essentials in commercial perfumers’ palettes. Of course, these two scents are very common and you must have come across one or even both of them.
  • The popular “Eau de Cologne” is a milder, watered-down perfume with a concentration between 2 and 5% essential oils to base. This style was originally started in Cologne, Germany, and used by both men and women before it becomes more popular and became exclusive to men only.
  • The Grasse in Provence, France, is known to be the source and capital of modern perfume production. It started as leather and tanning capital in the 13th century where it provides fashionable perfumed gloves. The glove feature gradually disappeared but the perfume is still very much in demand.
  • Scientific studies have shown that perfume can make you feel better. It is proven that there is a line of connection between scents and emotions. Therefore, putting on the right fragrance can bring out the personality on you and help you put up a better mood.
