Taste and Smell How are they connected?

How our taste buds and sense of smell are connected

Taste is often seen as a powerful sense, but in reality, it is the weakest sense in the body. People may not already know this, but it is linked heavily to the sense of smell. Try eating food with your fingers pinching your nose and you will get some idea of the strong connection between these two senses.

Taste buds are found all over the tongue as well as some other areas of the mouth. They form bundles of receptor cells and detect the five primary tastes of –

  • Sweet
  • Salty
  • Sour
  • Bitter
  • Umami

The sense of smell is obviously delivered to the brain through the nose. As the mouth and nose are physically connected, the act of eating will send the smell sensation of the food up the nasal passage to be converted by the brain.

Chemicals at play

These two senses in the brain are triggered by chemical reactions, which happen far more in the nasal passage than the mouth. There are 12 million highly sensitive odorant receptors in the nose that receive and then transmit the smells to the brain.

The connection between our taste buds and sense of smell are highly developed and have a symbiotic relationship. It is actually thought that the chemicals that are exhaled are converted into the sensation of taste while those that are inhaled are converted into the sensation of smell.

It is a fascinating part of science that isn’t always understood by people. It goes to show the importance of smell in our everyday life.
