Various fragrance styles have existed since the inception of perfumes. While some styles have not changed over time some have developed a better method over the years.

Basically there are 6 basic fragrance styles.

The listed styles can be used as a guide to help you understand your fragrance style and the best time to use them. We’ll look into the various classification of the various styles and explain them in detail.

Before we go into this let’s learn about reasons to choose your fragrance style based on the season.

From research carried out, it’s been shown that we have a stronger sense of smell during springs and summer time. This happens because the humidity level of the air is quiet high and this increases the moisture of our nasal passages which makes the nose much more sensitive to smell. For this reason, it is advised to pick heavier scents during the fall season while choosing moderate scents in the spring and summer.

The fragrance wheel is a design used to place smells and different Fragrance Styles into different categories. Although various notes from separate class might be put into any category of fragrance.  The term overtone of fragrance is basically whatever set of notes or tones that are more dominant in the fragrance. hence the arrangement of fragrance into six styles is based on the overtone of the fragrance. The other notes in small doses called the undertones help to compliment the overtone. An analogy to help you understand is to imagine the overtone to be the meat and the various undertones to be simply the seasonings.

Oriental Style

Oriental Fragrance style (also called Amber Fragrances) they are easily recognized by their spicy, refreshing and warm nature. This style of fragrance has specific notes that gives it its warm tones. Musk, Patchouli, Vanilla Amber, Sandalwood, clove, nutmeg etc. are some common examples of warm and spicy tones that are found in this category of fragrance style.

This fragrance is suitable for winter and Fall- Because it is long lasting, warm, and has a pleasant smell.

It should also be used when having a date this is due to the sensual aura this scent adds to you.

Marine Style

The Marine fragrance style leaves you smelling fresh and clean. The marine style became popular in the late 80s and early 90s with common fragrances such as cool water and many others. The common notes used in this fragrance includes linen, rosemary, clary sage and even sea salt. These gives the style its fresh ozone like smell. 

Recommendations

This style should be used during mid spring and summertime because they are light and can still linger for a longer period. 

It should also be used after having a shower before bedtime. If you want a clean scent on you then a couple of spray can take you during any season.

Fougere Style

This style was developed by Paul Parquet, a perfumer in 1882. The term Fougere means fern in French. Although called fern it was later revealed that the creator wished that that could be the actual smell of fern.

The fragrance style is a mix of lavender, Oak moss and coumarin properly combined to produce a sweet mossy-like smell.

In modern times, this fragrance Styles is added with green notes, florals and citruses to enhance the fragrance. Despite this, the original note will still be present in the traditional and modern version of Fougere.

Recommendations:

To be used at the end of summer and during fall.

Chypre Style

Chypre style was introduced in 1917. It is a style designed for men, although there are women chypres. This fragrance style has a woody, mossy and slightly fruity smell. This fragrance style offers depth and uniqueness due to its blend. For anyone who enjoys the smell of nature this would serve well as it mimics outdoor smells in a forest.

This is suitable for the fall season.

There exist various kinds of florals. this is one of the popular styles. It consists of flower smells. Each group of florals contributes something quite different to the fragrance. We’ll look into the three styles of floral perfumes. Despite the fact that this style can be added to other styles the group can also be worn alone. 

White Florals

 The White florals add elegance to your fragrance along with depth.  we can easily identify this fragrance by its powdery and the spicy smell that comes with it.  Florals such as Jasmine, Tuberose, Orchid and white Iris would fall into this category. 

Aquatic Florals

These are flowers that are found along the sea, oceans, ponds and other bodies of water. They are quite unique and most nose will not be able to identity it as floral easily.  This beautiful flower has a clean and fruity smell. Lotus, Water Lily, Water Poppy are a few notes that would fall into this category.

Fresh Picked Florals

 These are flowers that can easily be found in a garden. They are fresh smelling (Roses, Daisies, etc.) some have a sweet smell (Plumeria) while retaining its floral elegance. You will also find florals with a spiciness like (Carnation).

Recommendations

They fresh picked florals or aquatic florals should be used in spring and summer period. 

The white floral should be used in certain occasions

This is one fragrance style that has been around since the beginning of time. This fragrance consists of basically fruit smells. They popular example include the typical fruit smells while others are exotic. Despite the numerous categories it can easily narrowed to the following:

Citrus – Lemon, Lime, Lemongrass, Tangerine

Sweet- Berry, Melon, Apple, Tropical 

Recommendations:

 This should be used during summer time as it is light and will not be offensive during hot periods.
